Release time:2023-03-25 17:44  Source:    Author:
The 6th China-ASEAN Youth Summit (CAYS) is jointly organized by the Peking University Institute of Area Studies and Southeast Asian Association. CAYS is an international conference that gathers university students who are interested in China-ASEAN affairs to promote youth exchanges and deepen China-ASEAN regional cooperation.

Since its inauguration in 2016, CAYS has gathered close to 200 students from China and ASEAN countries every year to discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by China and ASEAN. During the conference, delegates bring forth their unique ideas and perspectives in order to promote interaction, understanding, and trust between youths from China and ASEAN.

As such, we invite youths interested in contributing to China-ASEAN relations to participate in this summit and interact with like-minded peers through dialogue and cultural exchange.

Theme

This year, our theme for the 6th CAYS is: "Resilience Amid Disruption: Envisaging a Blueprint for China-ASEAN Cooperation". Although the China-ASEAN region has been gradually recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, the current state of affairs has evolved to be an unfamiliar "new normal" ridden with uncertainties and disruptions. Intensified great power competition, the revolutionizing impact of digitalization, and the predicament of overlooked communities still pose challenges to the stability of the region.

In the face of these disruptions, resilience is not only key to overcoming unprecedented challenges but also to seizing new opportunities. Our conference hopes to empower youths to become leaders of tomorrow who actively involve themselves in discussing and tackling crucial issues present in the China-ASEAN region. During the 4-day long conference, our enriching line-up of events will provide an all-encompassing experience for our youths to learn about the importance of building resilience, both as an individual and as part of the China-ASEAN region.

Event Highlights

1. Model China-ASEAN Conference

The Model ASEAN-China committee sessions are the highlight of CAYS where delegates discuss key issues in a format that simulates actual ASEAN Summits. In each committee, delegates will represent a country/city and work with the rest of the committee to build consensus on an outcome document at the end of the conference, in line with the spirit of the “ASEAN Way”.

This year, our Summit will comprise 6 committees, including 4 offline and 2 online committees. The committee topics will revolve around the three pillars of the ASEAN community, which are political-security, economic, and socio-cultural. At the end of the summit, delegates will produce an official document detailing their discussion outcomes, which will be presented on the last day of the conference.

This year, our committees and topics are as follows:

2. Panel Discussions

The panel discussions are aimed at enriching the delegates' understanding of regional matters pertaining to China-ASEAN cooperation. We will invite guest speakers with expertise across various disciplines from the public and private sectors and non-governmental organizations to give their take on prospects for the region. Delegates will have the opportunity to interact with our guests during the Q&A sessions.
